Pharmacist: To Be or to Not to Be

“Be nice to pharmacists because we can kill you with one mistake” but “the good news is that the medicine you take while in a hospital has been brought to you by the medication expert – a pharmacist.” ~Unknown.  Pharmacist are people who posses the knowledge to inform customers and/or doctors or physicians about the purpose of any drug or medicine.  A wise man by the name of Walter Matthau once said, ” I wanted to be a pharmacist. I liked the way our local pharmacist was always dressed in a nice white coat; He looked very calm, you’d give him money, and he’d give you something you’d want to buy.” Indeed, they do more than wear white lab jackets and put medicine into bottles.  In order to be well equipped and trained to have this knowledge as a pharmacist, many classes dealing with and around chemistry must be taken. Classes include: Anatomy and Physiology, Biochemistry for Pharmaceutical Sciences, Fundamentals of Biology, General Physics, Immunology, Organic Chemistry, and Pharmacy Orientation.  Because of this, pharmacist have one of the most important and appreciated jobs in the healthcare field.  Even though it is very complicated to become a pharmacist, they are important to this world by what they do, how they do it, and why they do it.  This world definitely couldn’t go without them.

Pharmacist are people who have the knowledge and skill to perform out-of this-world-crazy task such as filling prescription and assisting customers about medicine. Pharmacist have one of the most stressful, long, and tiring jobs that requires twelve hours of focus and concentration per day. The Princeton Review explains, “Most pharmacists spend an average of 44 hours per week at their jobs, but individuals who are self-employed tend to work longer. In any case, the work is not sedentary, and pharmacists report spending a lot of their time on their feet” (The Princeton Review).   “Pre-pharmacy students must complete at least two years of college to be eligible for pharmacy school, though most complete 3-4 years of a bachelor’s degree program” (Pharmacist: Educational Requirements and Career Summary).  A pharmacist may start with their pre-requisite, then acquire their bachelor’s, get their Doctor of Pharmacy, or Pharm. D., and then it gets harder.  The final step in becoming a pharmacist is the actual real-world-real-life-experience in an actual work day of a pharmacist.  “Year four is almost all about practical experience. Students perform clinical rotations to put their acquired knowledge and experience to use. This includes interacting with patients, recommending medication variations and guiding administrative staff to better support customers and the community. Students typically perform seven to ten rotations, each lasting four to six weeks” (How to Become a Pharmacist: Careers as a Pharmacist).  Clinical experience is a major segment of a Pharm.D. program. In the first two years, students take Introductory Pharmacy Practice Experiences, in which students develop essential skills, such as consulting patients, delivering immunizations and performing screenings. During the final two years, students take Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experiences (APPEs) that place them in patient care settings under the supervision of licensed pharmacists. APPEs have rotations that allow students to experience different areas of pharmacy, including inpatient. ambulatory operations and electives” (Pharmacist Education and Career Training). All in all, pharmacist have a long, drawn-out journey to achieving their goal of becoming their life-calling.  There are many steps they take, many classes they go through, and many hours completed behind the table and doors of a pharmacist working alongside the professionals, hoping to one day be the one that is training the college students to be as good as them and let the cycle continue.

Pharmacist importance to this world is explained no other than the fact that they cure the unhealthy people in this world, or do everything in their God-given power they can to do so.  According to Role of a Pharmacist, “Pharmacists educate and advise physicians, nurses, and other health professionals on medication therapy decisions. Pharmacists also provide expertise about the composition of drugs, including their chemical, biological, and physical properties and their manufacture and use. They ensure drug purity and strength and make sure that drugs do not interact in a harmful way. Pharmacists are medication experts ultimately concerned about their patients’ health and wellness.” Without pharmacist, physicians, nurses, and all the many different kind of health care workers in the world would have a second job to do, harder and more demanding labor, and of course, more of the I-want-my-medicine-and-I-want-it-right-this-instant patient’s knocking down their door to get their prescriptions. Even though pharmacist have these patients all up in their business, “Making a mistake while working as a pharmacist could make a patient very ill or even result in a death. Dispensing medicines is one of the relatively few careers in which you could actually kill somebody just by misreading simple instructions or failing to spot a rudimentary mistake. Pharmacists need to be knowledgeable about the drugs they dispense and pay great attention to detail to fulfill the important role they play in protecting and improving the public’s health” (Roennevig).  Not only to pharmacist have to fill medicine bottles for other health care workers, they also have to worry about the fact that one mistake could lead to the death of a patient. This job basically went from hard and stressful, to next to impossible and much more stressful.  The lives of hundreds of millions are in the hands of human beings, people who do make mistakes.  So,  all in all, pharmacist may be considered as the most important job in the healthcare field.  They do everything, so what could we do without them?

Through my research, I’ve learned that pharmacist to more than just put pills in a bottoms. I’ve learned that they have to count the medicines, do the math to know how many milligrams need to be taken for each individual patient, and of course, deal with those no-good-very-bad-annoying-patients.  `Throughout it all, I’ve concluded that the pharmacy field is more than just a job.  It is a life behind the counter curing people and making everybody’s lives better.

Richard Cory and the Unknown Citizen Comparison

“The Unknown Citizen” and “Richard Cory” are both depicting ordinary, every-day-average-Joes, people having the wrong idea about extraordinary individuals.  W.H. Auden speaks highly of the consideration that is not present of the soul of the citizen, while Robinson’s shorter poem focuses on a broken, materialistic soul mistaken for a royalty-like, king of a man. The importance of appearance is challenged by the deaths of Richard Cory and the citizen because they were both viewed as perfect and they end up dying from earthly mistakes. This theme may be compared on the basis of their characterization, their social rank, and society’s perspective on the two characters.
Auden and Robinson characterize the main focus of the poem through the eyes of acquaintances who have witnessed or associated with Cory and the citizen and seen the challenge of the deaths of them. Robinson’s end to the opening stanza, “He was a gentleman from sole to crown, clean favored, and imperially slim.” suggest that the crowd and the middle-class viewed Cory’s outward appearance as royalty-like and, “richer than a king.” By viewing Cory as such a highly glorified individual, his death finally opens their eyes that he was just like them, broken and empty on the inside. Similarly, in “The Unknown Citizen” an extraordinary individual is, “in the modern sense of an old-fashioned word, he was a saint.” Similar characterization is shown in the third stanza of Robinson’s poem as Richard Cory is, “admirably schooled in every grace,” which describes how he is, like the unknown citizen , saint-like and by their deaths, people see the truth that the way the viewed or characterized them was wrong. Thus, the characterization of Richard Cory focuses on the royalty-like, king, and extraordinary person, while in Auden’s poem, the characterization focuses on the perfect-like personality of a citizen, both ending up in confusion and fooled people by the outward appearance of the men.

Another similarity, which builds off the characterization of the two focuses of the poem, is that Robinson’s and Auden’s poem both have a similar character that has a similar social rank. In “Richard Cory” Cory is looked up to and the crowd wishes, “that we were in his place.” In the poem, the city admired him and thought that he was socially “the top man” of the city. Likewise, in “The Unknown Citizen” the citizen is socially viewed as, “popular with his mates.” The citizen was viewed by the government as just another hard-working saint that, “never got fired.” Both Richard Cory and the unknown citizen are similarly viewed by the ordinary crowd of the city as extraordinary men that are flawless and can do no wrong, until they discover the truth of their souls. However, while they were both socially ranked as popular, better-than-everyone-else men, the society overlooked the materialistic, dead soul of the men and ranked them by the eye pleasing appearance that only goes so deep. Thus, the similarity between the social rank of Richard Cory and the citizen proves the way that they faked their way through life and fooled the society into thinking they were fine, even though they aren’t.

Along with these similarities, both poems have a society that has a similar look on the two main characters because they see them as super human beings. Robinson creates a society that admires and concentrates on Richard Cory’s outward look of, “clean favored and imperially slim. And he was always quietly arrayed.” Society has idealized Richard Cory, but truly they are blinded by his brokenness, his happiness, his freedom. Similarly, society has a perspective of the citizen that, “For everything he did he served the Greater Community.” Society sees his hard working, shy attitude, however his feelings, his emotion, his soul is not taken into consideration, nor is it defined. The images both poets depict of the characters are from society’s perspective, and that is not the real or true appearance of the men. Thus, blinded by the want-to-see appearance, society’s perspective focuses only skin deep, when the men are both hurting on the inside.
In both poems, the society, whether it be the  every day, normal people walking in the street or the government, creates two men (Cory and the citizen) that are not what they have been created as. They’re being judged by what they wear, how the talk, and even the amount of effort they put into life. By the basis of their characterization, their social rank, and society’s perspective on them, the challenge that appearance has on their death can be compared.

Frederick Douglass: Living in the Life of Religious Hypocrisy

In the autobiography, Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, Frederick Douglass captures of religious hypocrisy through the cruel and inhumane master, Captain Auld.  Douglass is born into the life of slavery. He faces many hardships that scars him for the rest of his life, such as: witnessing Captain Auld crying out a verse while whipping a young slave women and not being able to pray without permission.. Through going to church meetings, prayer, and the Sabbath School, Douglass presents us with a precise image of the cruel and unusual ways that Captain Auld uses religious hypocrisy with his slaves.

Douglass uses the description of the Methodist camp- meeting to create a vivid picture of how Captain Auld went to a church but is guilty of religious hypocrisy. Douglass interprets the transformation of Captain Auld after his meeting as to before when, “…my master attended a Methodist camp-meeting held in the Bayside, Talbot County, and there experienced religion”(66). Douglass analyzes the aftermath of this meeting because, “It neither made him more humane to his slaves, nor to emancipate them…it made him more cruel and hateful in all his ways…but after his conversion, he found religious sanction and support for his slave-holding cruelty” (66). Douglass is pouring out Auld’s religious hypocrisy.  He goes to this church meeting and when he comes back he is even more cruel and inhumane than when he first left which Douglass, “…hates the corrupt, slave-holding, women-whipping, cradle-plundering, partial and hypocritical Christianity of this land”(Appendix).  Douglass shows his emotions towards his masters and slaveholders about their religious hypocrisy all the way in the appendix. He’s referring back to all the corrupt times and the time where he whipped the slave women right in front of him.  As Douglass verbalizes negative and non human-like characteristics about Auld, he builds a valid argument because Captain Auld goes to this Methodist camp and comes back even worse than when he left, therefore, committing religious hypocrisy.

When Douglass brings forth the idea that he’s not even allowed to pray without permission from Captain  Auld, he commits religious hypocrisy every day. Douglass explains the attribute of Captain Auld’s house and how he, “ …proved himself an instrument in the hands of the church in converting many souls. His house was the preachers house”(66). Douglass is comparing Auld’s home to a church and says they had three or four preachers there at a time which means he allowed prayer and religious activity.  Douglass recognizes that, “His house was a house of prayer.  He prayed morning, noon, and night”(66-67), however, Auld wouldn’t even let his slaves pray most of the time yet, he prayed every time of the day.   slaves did enjoy, “ When he(Mr. Cookman) was at our house, we were sure to be called into prayer”(67), however, “When the others were there, we were sometimes called in and sometimes not(67).   Douglass builds his argument that Captain Auld is a religious hypocrite when, even though he is allowing four preachers into his “house of preachers” and “house prayers”, he is he is praying every minute of the day but won’t allow his slaves to come in and pray.

Similar to Auld’s “house of prayer” Douglass has a Sabbath School that teaches slaves to read the New Testament and when this is all taken away from him, Captain Auld along with many others are guilty to religious hypocrisy.  During his time at St. Michaels, Douglass explains that there was a guy named Mr. Wilson who, “…proposed to keep a Sabbath School…to learn to read the New Testament. We met but three times…(Mr. West and Mr. Fairbanks)came upon us with the sticks and other missiles, drove us off, and forbade us to meet again”(68).  Douglass highlights that he can’t even attempt to teach slaves to read the bible, thus, by doing this, Mr. West; Mr. Fairbanks; Captain Auld; and many others commit religious hypocrisy.  Along with the Sabbath School incident, Douglass witnesses a horrific viewing of Auld whipping a young woman. While he did so, “…he would quote this passage of scripture-’he that knoweth his master’s will, and doeth it not, shall be beat with many stripes”(68). In Luke 12:47, the meaning of “master” is not referring to a slave-holding master.  It is The Jesus Christ master, and the consequences, as Luke says, is being beaten which is the chastisement for disobeying the Great master, not a slave master.  His master, “…found religious sanction for his cruelty”(67) which means he found religious peace and satisfaction for his actions.  Auld is doing wrong and figuring that if it pleases him, then it pleases whom he worships.  Therefore, he finds religious peace in his wrongdoings.

Douglass speaks many times of his views of religious hypocrisy in the South and how he doesn’t have the freedom of religion that the slaveholders and masters possess. Douglass’ masters wouldn’t even let him pray so there could be no way a religion could be further spread.  With the use of church, prayer, and the Sabbath School, Douglass tries to persuade that religious hypocrisy influenced his everyday life negatively and that his masters were very hypocritical and cruel by using verses and religious references.  Douglass acknowledges that not everyone has the desire to be religious like he does and some people, like Captain Auld, just don’t accept it.  Therefore, he scrutinizes the life of hypocrisy and expresses his disapproval of that life.

Movie Review- Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde

When I first started reading, The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, I expected it to be an advanced book that I did not understand, nor enjoy. However, I understood and enjoyed the book. On the other hand, when I first started watching the movie, I was rather confused because I expected it to be spot on like the book, however, it has an effective twist and I liked it.

Negatives:

— The Dr. Hyde physical appearance is less brutal and less ugly as the book depicts him to be, but the idea is clearly there.

— Most of the book is seen and narrated through the eyes of Mr. Utterson, but he is not present anywhere in the movie making it harder to understand where in the book we are in the movie.

— The plot ends abruptly at the end of the movie with Lanyon shooting Hyde, but it is not completely off, just quite twisted because in the novel, Hyde commits suicide instead of being shot.

— The first transformation that Jekyll makes from himself to Hyde is foolish, silly, and so extraordinary that I lost focus of what was going on.  The worst part is that the transformation didn’t make sense; Jekyll falls down and goes off into “Hyde’s world” and becomes practically the dictator over all the fantasies.

Positives:

— The fear expressed from Ivy of Mr. Hyde truly illustrates the scariness of Hyde’s face, voice, and actions as she is practically being held hostage by Hyde.

— Easy to watch, no scenes in the movie where the hide-under-the-blanket method comes in.  Throughout the movie there is suspense/thrill, but no parts are parent-friendly only.

—Thrilling, will never lose the attention of viewers and throughout the movie, an event from the novel is always happening, even though it might not always be exactly parallel to the novel.  I enjoyed watching it and would watch it again.

Overall:

— It is worth watching the movie to compare it to the book. I would recommend the book to one with higher level knowledge and vocabulary to understand it, which helps you understand the movie.  Overall, good movie and book and is worth reading/watching again.

Career Comparative Essay

Ever since I’ve been old enough to go outside on my own, I have loved hands-on activities and running around barefooted outside.  This is why I’m pursuing hands-on, active jobs such as civil engineering, pharmacist, and chemical engineering.

Considering criteria such as salary, a normal workday and flexibility, level of education, colleges, and aptitude, I would choose to be a pharmacist because it involves math and science and it also allows me a more flexible work schedule.

The comparison chart below illustrates the criteria that I considered in making my next career choice:

Civil Engineer                 Pharmacist               Chemical Engineer

Salary Median Pay: $79,340/yr

$38.14/hr.

Potential: $122,020

Median Pay: $94,350/yr

$45.36/hr.

Potential: $154,840

Median Pay: $116,670/yr

$56.09/hr.

Potential: $132,670

Workday 40+ hours/week. Don’t get to home often during the day. 12 hour days with occasional half days.  Must get in at least 40 hours each week. 50-60 hour weeks. This is the same whether someone work in the plant, office, or lab.
Flexibility Usually a full day whether in the lab, office, or field. You get a partner which enables someone to switch work days, half days, or even days off. Not a 9-to-5 job, however, it is tough and demanding.

The workday and flexibility for a chemical engineer is not hourly, and the have many vacation days throughout the year, which means someone could leave work and take off whenever they need to.  Because the level of education required to be a chemical engineering is a bachelor’s degree, someone would be able to go to college for four years and quickly get to work in an office, lab, or work field.  This career looks to be the most beneficial in salary, workday/flexibility, and level of education.

A strong argument could be used for a civil engineer that could make $122,020 per year, however, not quite as much as a chemical engineer.  If I were to invest in an engineering job, civil engineering would be the one.  Since skills in STEM, interpersonal skills, and leadership skills are required, I think this career would suit me well because I excel in math and science and, if I worked hard, I could be a good leader.  Similar to chemical engineering, civil engineering have many different places to work such as a field, lab, or even office.  It would also give me an amazing opportunity to go to an engineering college such as the university of Texas, Cal Berkeley, and the University of Michigan.

Although both engineering educations would get me in the workforce sooner, I would choose to be a pharmacist because it is a wonderful fit for my up-and-going, hands-on, and active mind-set and personality.

To begin my career as a pharmacist, I would apply to pharmacy school such as the University of Cal. Then I would try to get a job as a pharmacy technician at a local retail pharmacy such as Krogers or Walgreens.  Obtaining a job as a pharmacy technician would allow me to work around full-time pharmacist, which would provide me the opportunity to learn all aspects of the trade.  Therefore, I think, sense I love hands-on activities, that I’d be able to stick with being a pharmacist and eventually be able to make $154,840.

All three careers I have researched and studied involve working with chemicals, math and science, and are hands-on jobs that serve for customers.  However, the career I’d like to devote my life to would be a pharmacist that processes a doctor’s order for  patient’s prescription.  Fifty years from now, I’d like to still be following in my mother’s footsteps as a pharmacist making closer to $160,000 a year.

Expository Essay – Importance of Perseverance

The sun scorches their back, their shoes become red from the track, and sweat rolls down the faces of the track stars as their captain yells, “C’mon guys, just a few more laps, we can do it. All this hard work will pay off in the long run!” As shown in the track practice, the runners push and strive to be the best by persevering through practices. Perseverance is important because it teaches hard work and allows one to conquer tough times.
All teenagers at one point or another will have “the big game” or that one important test, such as the SAT or ACT, that they’ll have to practice, study, and work hard at in order to persevere. For example, Michael Phelps, being the greatest swimmer to ever step on the Earth, trained three times a day, six times a week, and twice on Sunday. Phelps had a goal to set the record for most top-3-finishes at the Olympics, so he worked harder than anyone person on the planet. By having an I-can-and-I-will attitude, perseverance to excel in a sport can teach hard work and discipline in life. In addition, Michael, being 18,will be taking his college entry test, or SAT, and he has been in the books as much as a cow eats grass. Michael has a yearning to do the best he can do in order to make a perfect score: a 32. In order to do this, Michael has studied at home, at school, even in the car if he can. Because of this, hard work, dedication, and a good work ethic is important in persevering and being successful.
Like a tiny fish in the middle of hungry sharks, perseverance is important because it can help conquer tough times. For example, In the Holocaust memoir Night, Elie Wiesel went through lack of food, brutality, runs through a blizzard, and even deaths throughout his time in the concentration camps. Through it all, Elie Wiesel persevered and conquered the brutality of the camp in order to survive. Through the “why me?” times, the importance of perseverance will allow you to conquer the tough times. In addition, Jessie’s parents were fighting about everything. Money, jobs, and even Jessie, everything they said they fought about. Her parents got divorced, however Jessie was sad, she fought through, persevered, and conquered her parent’s divorce. Therefore, through the why-does-this-have-to-be-me times, by persevering, hard times can be conquered.
Sun goes down, shoes are cleaned, and ice baths are taken after the 2015 State Track meet. The runners worked hard all year and it has all paid off in one day. Because perseverance is important, it will help teach hard work and also helps conquer hard times

Metaphor Poem Composition

You might think I’m just

an athletic, hermit crab of a boy

with blonde hair

and green eyes

But I know I am more

much more than that

not a farmer or genius

not a bird or ocean

A racing pool

a fast-paced race pool

When I’m down under the water

or in isolation

When I go to the pool and think

listening to pump-up songs from my beats

I am a race pool being unused

water calm

waiting to be jumped in

But when I perk up

the waves of the pool start up again

molecules of water jump out of the pool

tempting kids to hop in

I begin to produce waves

that are haulted by the walls

until I get tired

and that’s when the pool dies down

rest and wait for the next competition to begin

and begin

and begin

this blonde-haired, green-eyed boy

is a waved-filled, constantly waiting pool
